Many people simply don't breathe...as someone who has had breathing issues such as asthma, allergies, etc., it was vital that I learn how to breathe correctly.
As a dancer, I was never truly educated on the techniques of breathing and the actual patterns of breath. It was only after I was a dedicated student of yoga and running that I was finally able to grasp the concept of understanding breath.
Most people simply breathe from the upper chest area, causing fatigue, anxiety and breathlessness. The only way to truly breathe is from the lower belly or diaphragm which will help to increase oxygen uptake, decrease anxiety and helps to promote a more efficient lymphatic system.
Breathe slower, live longer!

Classical pilates wants a person to breath laterally by expanding the rib cage in order to keep the lower and deeper abdominal muscles engaged and working. I find this leaves me with oxygen debt; I was taught to sing as a pre-teen, and to always breathe from the diaphpragm. Are there ways around these two seemingly contradictory ideas?
ReplyDeleteEddiuny, What a great question. I personally disagree with the pilates theory of breathe expansion and "control". I truly believe in diaphragm breath technique. To breathe from the diaphragm is the most effective process for maximum oxygen uptake...
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question, NO. I do not think there is a bridge between these two theories. What's the point of contracting and engaging the abdominal region if you are not able to effectively take in adequate oxygen?
Hope this helps!
